Mads Mikkelsen is uniquely well-suited for the role of Captain Ludvig Kahlen, an impoverished Danish war veteran who sets out in the mid-18th century to try and tame the Jutland Heath, a huge and forbidding land, where no crop can grow and lawlessness reigns.
He wants to establish a settlement on the land in the name of the king. But neighboring nobleman Frederik De Schinkel (Bjenneberg), insists that the scrubby land belongs to him and an escalating feud between the two begins.
