Love knows no age limit in this heartwarming romantic comedy about Mahin, a 70-year old widow in Tehran.
Every day is the same for Mahin (Lili Farhadpour): sleeping in until noon; answer Facetime calls from her daughter who lives overseas; tending to her garden and making trips to the not-so-local market from her home on the outskirts of Tehran. Hopeful of romance, she stakes out a local eatery until she finds an elderly taxi driver named Faramarz (Esmail Mehrabi) who is complaining about not having a woman at home to cook for him. Like Mahin, divorcee Faramarz has been on his own for years, and their mutual loss brings them together like well-worn puzzle pieces.
They spend a night evading nosy neighbours, getting tipsy and dancing into the early hours. In the context of Iran’s conservative values, where unmarried members of the opposite sex cannot be alone together, these acts are as political as they are romantic.
The two veteran actors have great chemistry: there’s an infectious cheekiness to their performances which makes My Favourite Cake radical and heartwarming. And above all, a reminder that in a world where everyone is judged, pure, unconditional love remains timeless.
